Florida Southern College
On Nov. 29, over 100 Florida Southern students gathered to watch 28 FSC coeds have their hair cut to provide wigs for children afflicted with cancer and other illnesses. By the end of the evening, these girls donated over 20 feet of their hair to Locks of Love, a not-for-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children who are suffering from long-term medical hair loss. Hairstylists from Esquire Hair Salon provided new hair designs at no charge for all the girls who participated. Other FSC students, including at least one young man, are now growing their locks to reach the 10-inch minimum length ponytail necessary to create a wig for Locks of Love. The students will repeat this event next semester.
Students actually bid on the right to snip the first ponytail, raising over $1,000, which was donated to Invisible Children, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to war-affected children by providing access to quality education and innovative economic opportunities.
Since its founding in 1883, the mission of Florida Southern College has been to prepare students to make a positive impact on society. As these wonderful students have demonstrated, they are not waiting for graduation to begin making differences in our world. In big ways and small, the students at Florida Southern are well on their way to making the world a better place.
